Stepping into the world of martial arts for the first time can be a mix of excitement and uncertainty. As many new students grapple with common concerns—ranging from fears of injury to worries about feeling self-conscious—we understand that the beginning of any journey is crucial. That’s why we’ve created our Positive Start programme, designed exclusively for beginners.

Positive Start Programme

For students with little or no experience

Our beginners programme is a welcoming embrace, assuming no prior knowledge and requiring no specific level of physical fitness or flexibility. We’ve tailored this programme to address the very questions and concerns that might be lingering in your mind or the mind of your child.

At Family Martial Arts Centres we create Leaders NOT Followers. Children are taught the value of Self Leadership giving them the ability to:

  • Resist Unhealthy Peer Pressure!
  • Not follow the Crowd!
  • Choose friends Wisely!
  • Always do what is Right!

Our beginners programme is a perfect starting point for those curious about martial arts, providing a safe and encouraging environment to explore its benefits.

Exactly what will I do in the class?

Each class will consist of:

  1. A warm up including a variety of exercises and stretches to improve your fitness, flexibility, balance and coordination.
  2. This will be followed by practicing some very basic stances, leg raises and punching techniques.
  3. You will then be taught a specific technique in detail. This could be a kick, a block, a hand combination technique or a self-defence technique.
  4. You will then have the opportunity to practice this technique using a variety of training aids including strike shields, paddles and floor standing punch bags.
  5. The class will also include a group chat around the life skill of the week as well as some basic terminology.
  6. Finally the class will end with a warm down exercise.

The Positive Start programme offers a choice of 5 classes per week giving you the flexibility to train as often as you wish or change from week to week which class you attend. A bit like a gym, you don’t need to book in but just turn up as a when it suits you. However, we do recommend regular attendance of a least one lesson per week to really benefit from the programme.

Class Highlights:

Stances, Blocks, Kicks, Strikes

Basic Martial Arts Skills: Learn fundamental martial arts, karate & kickboxing skills using bare hands, feet, elbows and knees. Learn multiple kicks, blocks, punches and hand techniques, as well as evasive manoeuvres and counter attacks.

Self-Defence Skills

Self-Defence Skills: Acquire practical, basic fundamentals to empower yourself in real-world situations learning both close range and long range techniques, body language and avoidance skills.

Physical Conditioning

Physical Conditioning: Get fit and healthy whilst having fun!. Tone muscle, gain strength and improve your flexibility, balance, and coordination which will help you in all areas of your life.

Separate Classes for Beginners: Dedicated beginners classes allowing you to train alongside like-minded individuals and families, fostering a supportive community. These classes are safe and unintimidating for new students with little or no experience.

Flexible Timetable: Choose from 5 classes per week, accommodating varied schedules, and allowing you to change class from week to week without the need to book in.

Be a Leader. Not a Follower: Beyond the physical, discover and develop essential Leadership and Life Skills integral to martial arts philosophy, helping you to develop mental strength and resilience.

Tiger Tots Programme for 3 & 4 year olds

Saturday 10.00am to 10.30am

For our youngest learners aged three and up, our Tiger Tots programme offers a basic introduction to martial arts. Focused on exercise, balance, co-ordination, and simple techniques, this class lays the foundation for seamless progression into the Positive Start class at age five. Empower your child with Family Martial Arts Centre’s Children’s Programme, where every class shapes a future of resilience, confidence, and personal triumph.
